I had never made flour tortillas before this and never realized how simple it actually was! This 5 ingredient recipe for homemade flour tortillas will leave you never wanting to buy them at the store ever again!
5 INGREDIENT HOMEMADE FLOUR TORTILLAS
INGREDIENTS:
2.5 cups (346g) all purpose flour
1 tsp. fine sea salt
1.5 teaspoons baking powder
3 tbsp. lard, vegetable shortening, or vegetable oil
3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon warm water (not hot)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Heat a cast-iron skillet over high heat (you want it super hot to cook these properly, about 500ºF.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sea salt, and baking powder.
Next, add in the lard, vegetable shortening, or vegetable oil. Mix together with your hands until you reach a cornmeal type texture.
Add in the warm water and mix with your hands until the dough forms.
On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough until it becomes smooth. Cover with a towel and let rest for 10 minutes.
Once the dough is done resting, remove the towel and give the dough a little pat. Section into 16 equal pieces for normal size tortillas. (I combined about 3 of the dough balls together for burrito sized tortillas)
Lightly flour a surface and the top of the dough ball. Roll out the dough into a circle until you have achieved your desired thickness.
Place the tortilla directly onto the cast-iron skillet and cook 30 seconds per side and then transfer to either to a tortilla warmer or towel and cover.
Repeat with remaining dough.
Tip: I kept the tortillas warm in my oven on the "keep warm" function until ready to use.
Fill, top with butter, or just eat them as is! Enjoy!
Thank you so much!
Great job on the tortillas, Nicole!!
